PPAG ELECTS FIRST FELLOWS (FPPAG)
Marcia Buck, PharmD

Marcia L. Buck, PharmD, FCCP, FPPAG is the Clinical Pharmacy Coordinator for the University of Virginia Children's Hospital and an Associate Professor in the Schools of Medicine and Nursing at the University of Virginia. She also serves as adjunct faculty for Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Buck received her B.S. in Pharmacy and Pharm.D. degrees from Purdue University and completed her pediatric residency and fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina. She came to the University of Virginia in 1989. In 2005, Marcia received the University of Virginia Children's Hospital Caregiver of the Year award in recognition of her clinical service. She has also received an Outstanding Preceptor award from Virginia Commonwealth University, the 2006 Preceptor of the Year award from University of Virginia pharmacy residents, and the 2008 Birdsong Award for Excellence in Teaching from the UVA Department of Pediatrics. Marcia has been an active member of PPAG for more than a decade. She has been an invited speaker and has presented her research at several PPAG meetings and has also served as an abstract reviewer. She has been both an author and an editor for a wide variety of publications, including Pediatric Pharmacotherapy, a monthly peer-reviewed newsletter, and is one of the authors of the Pediatric Medication Education Text. Marcia was one of the founding members of the Editorial Review Board for The Journal of Pediatric Pharmacy Practice and continues to serve on the International Review Board of The Journal of Pediatric Pharmacology and Therapeutics. She has published her work in both of these PPAG publications. She also serves on the editorial boards for The Annals of Pharmacotherapy and Pharmacotherapy. Dr. Buck has also been an ACCP Fellow since 1998.
James Dice, PharmD

Dr. Jim Dice received his BS in Pharmacy from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy & Science (1977) and completed an ASHP-Accredited Residency in Hospital Pharmacy, at the Medical College of Virginia (1978). He received a Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in 1980 and subsequently completed a Pediatric Pharmacy Practice residency at the University of Tennessee and LeBonheur Children's Medical Center (1981) in Memphis Tennessee. Since completing his formal education, he has become an established neonatal and pediatric clinical practitioner and pediatric pharmacy practice manager who has evolved as an important leader in pediatric pharmacy community.
Dr. Dice began his career as an Assistant Professor of Pharmacy and Pediatrics at the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma Children Memorial Hospital, where he developed the pediatrics component of the therapeutics curriculum and developed a pharmacokinetics service and home parenteral nutrition program. He was voted Student American Pharmaceutical Association's outstanding faculty member in 1983. Dr. Dice then moved to Children's National Medical Center (CNMC) in Washington, DC where served as Assistant Director of Pharmacy. During this time he established/expanded clinical pharmacy programs, automated the parenteral nutrition compounding process, started an IV Team, and was involved with student pharmacist and postdoctoral residency education. While at CNMC, he worked with the Baxa Corporation to develop their parenteral nutrition compounder, which automated the preparation of parenteral nutrition solutions. Dr. Dice also served as chairperson for an independent IRB.
In 1991 he became Director of Pharmacy at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and a member of the University of Pittsburgh faculty. He expanded the unit dose and IV admixture service, implemented clinical services to the PICU, NICU, Hematology/Oncology and Solid Organ Transplant Service, implemented a hospital wide therapeutic drug monitoring service, published a drug dosing book and formulary, serve as a member of General Clinical Research Center Review Committee and served as preceptor for pharmacy students.
Dr. Dice is currently the Director of Pharmacy at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters (CHKD) in Portsmouth, VA. He has implemented a therapeutic monitor service with medical staff credentialing of the pharmacists involved, an integrated distribution/clinical staffing model, and PGY-1 residency program. He has won two Best Practice Awards from the Pediatric Pharmacy Advocacy Group (PPAG). He is actively involved in local, state, and national organizations including being elected to the Board of Directors of PPAG and served as COO, then Chairperson of the Board, and has served on the Pharmacy Executive Committee of Child Health Corporation of America. Dr. Dice has collaborated on numerous research studies, publications & books and has made numerous presentations at local, state and national meetings. He has served on the editorial board of the Journal of the Intravenous Nursing, a reviewer for several pharmacy journals and meeting presentations and served on several advisory boards including the Care of High Risk Neonate after Discharge.
Helen Beckman Fiechtner, PharmD

Helen B. Fiechtner, PharmD, FPPAG is a Professor of Pharmacy Practice for the College of Pharmacy at South Dakota State University and the Pediatric Clinical Pharmacist for Sanford Children's Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD being appointed to this joint position in 1991. She also serves as Adjunct Associate Professor for the Department of Pediatrics, Sanford School of Medicine at University of South Dakota. Dr. Fiechtner received her B.S. in Pharmacy from South Dakotas State University and her Pharm.D. degree and pediatric residency from the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Previously she worked at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, MN in various decentralized areas and before that she held a joint position with North Dakota State University College of Pharmacy and St. Luke's Hospital (pediatrics/neonatology) in Fargo, ND. Throughout Dr. Fiechtner's career she has been instrumental in developing and advancing pediatric pharmacy services along with educating many pharmacy students.
Dr. Fiechtner joined PPAG in 1991 making a commitment to the growth and development of the organization. She has attended most of the annual PPAG meetings and specialty conferences. Dr. Fiechtner was elected to the Board of Directors in 1997, serving a three year term. During her time on the Board, she was chairperson of the nominations committee and developed the policy and procedures for nominations and elections. Dr. Fiechtner was one of the 6 co-authors of the Consumer's Guide book Children's Prescription Medications written with PPAG in 1997 and 2001. She continues to be active in the organization helping in various ways and serving on the Advocacy Committee.
Kay C. Kyllonen, PharmD

Dr. Kay Kyllonen received her BS in pharmacy from St. Louis College of Pharmacy. She first worked at the University of Louisville General Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. She received her PharmD from University of Kentucky in 1984. After graduation she completed the Pediatric Pharmacy Practice Residency at LeBonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
Dr. Kyllonen has been an employee of the Cleveland Clinic since 1995. Her service area has included both general pediatrics and neonatal intensive care. She rounds with a multidisciplinary neonatal intensive care team providing drug information and making patient specific medication related recommendations. She was the first person to develop a pharmaceutical care practice in pediatrics at the hospital. Much of her work has been focused on medication safety issues for children and parenteral nutrition. She serves on the Pediatric Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee, Nutrition committee, and NICU operations committee as well as several others. Kay became the director of the Cleveland Clinic Pharmacy Practice Residency in 2006, supervising 2–3 residents/year. She also provides clinical rotations for up to 6 pharmacy residents/yr and 2–3 pharmacy students. She received the award for preceptor excellence in 2007. She has been involved in some clinical research involving neonatal or pediatric patients. These projects are generally in collaboration with physician colleagues and/or pediatric residents.
Dr. Kyllonen was the first pharmacist invited to join the previously all physician Cleveland Area Neonatal Roundtable. This group represents neonatal providers from almost all Cleveland area neonatal practices and debates and derives evidence based practice principles from the current literature. She has also been the Course Coordinator and Instructor Pharmacology and Therapeutics for the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine since 1998 where she received the Instructor of the Year Award for Basic Sciences in 2005.
From 1985–1995, she worked at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. While there she was instrumental in the start up of the Pediatric Nutrition Support Team and the Interdisciplinary Infant Comfort Group. At that time she was also the coordinator of the Bachelor and PharmD clerkships for the department of pharmacy for University Hospitals. This included placement of students with preceptors and supervision of their progress and acting as liaison with the University of Toledo. In the early ‘90's, she became a respondent, then editor and primary systems operator of “The Pharmacy” a drug information service on a public access computer bulletin board.
Dr. Kyllonen has been precepting pharmacy students since 1986. She has trained pharmacy residents in pediatrics since 1993. She has given educational lectures to every level of health care professional- student and practitioner –respiratory therapist, nurse, pharmacist, physician- in both formal and informal settings. She has given numerous lectures in the non-health care community.
She is a member of several professional pharmacy organizations- the Pediatric Pharmacy Advocacy Group (PPAG), The American College of Clinical Pharmacy, The American Society of Health System Pharmacists and locally, the Ohio College of Clinical Pharmacy. Most notably, she chaired of the Annual Meeting Planning Committee for PPAG in 2009 and is active in the education committee. She has given several lecture presentations and workshops at PPAG annual meetings.
